Model Predictive Control of an Integrated Fast Battery Charger for Electric Vehicles with Open-Winding PMSM Drive

This paper presents an integrated battery charging system for electric vehicles (EVs) using a dual inverter topology. In propulsion mode, the dual inverter drives a three-phase open-winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OW-PMSM). During battery charging, the motor windings function as inductors, forming a three-phase interleaved buck converter that functions as a fast charger to regulate the battery voltage. At the same time, one inverter operates as an active front-end rectifier, maintaining the DC-link voltage and achieving unity power factor. A finite control set model predictive control strategy is applied, utilizing the same motor model equations in both operating modes. Simulation results demonstrate high power quality and fast transient response, validating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
