Secretary Bird optimization algorithm-based control approach for performance improvement of wave energy conversion systems

This paper presents the use of the Secretary Bird optimization algorithm (SBOA) in designing a proportionalintegral (PI) controller for the transient response improvement of a wave energy conversion system (WECS) connected to the grid, when affected by different conditions of operation. The system used entails an oscillating water column (OWC) device and a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) coupled together to provide power to the grid. The grid and WEC systems are linked by power electronic devices, a generator-side converter (GSC) to minimize power loss in the generator and maximize the active power generated, and a gridside inverter (GSI) to regulate the point of common coupling (PCC) and DC link voltages. PI controllers are used to control GSC and GSI. PI controllers’ gains are optimally designed using SBOA. The quality of the presented design of SBOA-based PI controllers is proven by comparing its response to that of using genetic algorithm (GA) and gray wolf optimization (GWO)based PI controllers. The integral square error (ISE) criterion is considered the objective function. The SBOA strategy achieved the least ISE value of 0.1666, giving a very satisfactory operation.
