A Simple and Cost-Effective Approach on Partial Discharge Measurements Using the UHF Method

Due to the rising nominal voltages in electric vehicles (EVs), partial discharge (PD) monitoring is becoming critical. A PD detection solution that is compact and suitable for on-line monitoring is required to meet EV demands. This paper proposes repurposing a Wi-Fi antenna as a compact UHF sensor for PD detection in EV drivetrains. It is a simplified and cost-effective alternative for complex PD antenna design and manufacturing. To assess the antenna’s performance, four well-known PD types were recreated and evaluated: tip-plate (positive corona), surface partial discharges (parallel and perpendicular discharges) and internal partial discharges within a void. The antenna set-up and measurement approach are presented and described in detail. The obtained results are validated through comparison with characteristic PD patterns and a standard detection unit. Limitations and drawbacks are also discussed.
