Preparation of a Textile Fiber-Supported Copper Complex for Photocatalytic Degradation of Methyl Orange: A Comprehensive Laboratory Course for Developing Research Literacy in Senior Undergraduates
A multistep experiment for a comprehensive laboratory course was designed and executed, incorporating topics in materials preparation, chemical and instrumental characterization, catalytic applications, and mechanism exploration. Senior undergraduates who are about to start their postgraduate studies prepared a textile fiber-supported copper complex catalyst, PANFTPA-ECH@Cu(II), and it served as the heterogeneous catalyst for the degradation of methyl orange in aqueous solution under natural light. Through characterization of fiber samples using advanced techniques, students gained hands-on experience with modern analytical methods, while the PANFTPA-ECH@Cu(II)-mediated system demonstrated enhanced catalytic performance, simplified post-treatment procedures, good recyclability, and scalable processing, which collectively provided students with practical insights into systematic scientific research processes. Moreover, this laboratory course integrates principles spanning organic chemistry, coordination chemistry, analytical chemistry, catalytic chemistry, and materials science through sequential unit operations, effectively reinforcing theoretical frameworks while simultaneously developing competencies in experimental design, instrumental operation, and teamwork toward enhancing their scientific literacy.
