INVESTIGATION OF PHYTOCHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS OF GINGER USING TLC AND ASSESSMENT OF THEIR ANTIMICROBIAL POTENTIAL THROUGH ZONE OF INHIBITION
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is one of the most well-known spices with antimicrobial activity. However, different extraction methods of ginger will result in different antimicrobial properties due to the various substances extracted. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the component of ginger (Zingiber officinale) extract in methanol solvent using thin layer chromatography (TLC). Methanol extract of ginger using a soxhlet extraction method and evaluated for their phytochemistry using TLC. Phytochemical analysis of the methanolic extract of the rhizomes revealed the presence of alkaloids, reducing sugars, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins, saponins etc, in them. The present study revealed that ginger has antimicrobial potential. A disc diffusion assay was used to obtain the antimicrobial potential of the extract through zone of inhibition. This study indicates ginger crude extract exhibits potent antibacterial activities against soil bacterial strains. Therefore, they can be used for the treatment of various diseases against the microbial pathogen. In this regards, medicinal plant and its constituents play an important role in diseases management via modulation of biological activities.
