Visible Light‐Promoted Esterification of Carboxylic Acids via Photoacid Generation Catalysis
The ester functionality is ubiquitously found in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and perfumes. Among the various methods of ester synthesis, the acid‐catalyzed coupling of carboxylic acids with alcohols is the most common approach. Herein, a mild photochemical method is introduced, leveraging a photoacid generation approach utilizing an arylazo sulfone as the sulfonic acid precursor. A broad substrate scope of carboxylic acids or alcohols is reported, while a continuous flow process has been also implemented.
