The Role of Intellectual Property Rights in Supporting Women-Led Green Innovations in India
The increasing focus on sustainable development and environmental protection has given rise to a new wave of green innovations, many of which are being led by women entrepreneurs across India. These women are engaging in eco-friendly practices such as organic farming, biodegradable product manufacturing, renewable energy solutions, and the preservation of traditional ecological knowledge. However, despite their significant contributions, many women innovators remain excluded from the benefits of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) regime due to a lack of awareness, legal literacy, and institutional barriers. This paper critically examines the role of IPR in empowering women-led green enterprises in India. It explores the existing legal framework governing patents, trademarks, and protection of traditional knowledge, while identifying gaps in accessibility and implementation that affect women innovators. The study adopts a doctrinal research method and includes an analysis of relevant laws, government policies, and case studies of women entrepreneurs who have either benefited from or struggled with the IPR system. By highlighting both the opportunities and challenges, the paper argues for gender-sensitive reforms in the IPR regime and stronger policy support to ensure equitable access. Promoting legal awareness, simplifying procedures, and offering financial and legal aid can play a crucial role in bridging the gender gap in IPR protection. Empowering women through legal recognition of their green innovations is essential for building an inclusive and sustainable economy.
