Understanding downsyndrome: causes ,types, features ,health risk, life expectancy
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder resulting from the presence of an additional full or partial chromosome 21, commonly referred to as Trisomy 21. This extra genetic material disrupts normal developmental processes, leading to characteristic physical traits, intellectual disabilities, and a higher risk of various medical conditions. Although Trisomy 21 is the predominant form, other types such as Translocation and Mosaicism also exist. This review comprehensively explores the genetic mechanisms, classification, clinical features, and current diagnostic strategies used to identify the condition. Special emphasis is placed on common health concerns associated with Down syndrome, such as congenital heart defects, endocrine disorders, obesity, and hematological malignancies. The review also discusses evolving prenatal screening technologies, including non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), which analyzes cell-free fetal DNA and offers high sensitivity and specificity. While NIPT has revolutionized prenatal screening, its classification remains non-diagnostic, necessitating follow-up testing through invasive methods like amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS). Additionally, the high cost of NIPT limits its accessibility, leading many healthcare providers to rely on first-trimester ultrasound and serum screening as initial steps. Advances in medical interventions and early developmental support have significantly improved the life expectancy and quality of life for individuals with Down syndrome. This review concludes by highlighting promising research in gene silencing and therapeutic approaches, underscoring the importance of continuous innovation in the management of Down syndrome.
