Urban Development Programmes and Demographic Challenges in Uyo Capital City, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria
Urbanization in Nigeria is accelerated with a projected population growth rate of 87% which is estimated to double itself in the next two decades. This rapid urbanization has led to significant challenges, including urban infrastructure decay, slum proliferation, environmental threats and unequal socio-economic livelihood of urban dwellers. The study investigates the relationship between urban development programmes and demographic challenges in Uyo Capital City, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. System theory which analyses urban development and its impacts is the relevant theoretical framework adopted for the study. A mixed method approach combining both qualitative and content analysis methods was employed and used for the study; this reveals the effects of urban development on population, displacement, loss of property and economic hardship for residents, which negatively indicates significant socio-economic effects on the displaced populations with concomitant reduction of infrastructural deficits and slum proliferation. The study concluded by recommending a public-private partnership approach to urban development, investment in education to boost people's awareness in family planning and population control, environmental sanitation and rural development as this can transform into a more inclusive and sustainable approach towards enhancing the livelihood of the inhabitants
