Harris platelet syndrome – Recognising the entity beyond geographic bounds
ABSTRACT Inherited giant platelet disorders (IGPDs) are a group of disorders characterised by decreased platelet count and giant platelets with variable bleeding symptoms. Harris platelet syndrome, a recently described entity of unknown pathogenesis, is a sub-type of IGPD characterised by mild-to-severe thrombocytopenia and giant platelets with a geographic prevalence in North Eastern part of the Indian subcontinent. We report a case of Harris platelet syndrome in a patient from Karnataka with her ethnicity from West Bengal, highlighting the importance of knowledge of the condition to avoid misdiagnosis.
