The Founding of Seoakseowon and the Intellectual Significance of the Compilation of Seoakji(西岳志) in Late Joseon Korea
This article analyzed the significance of the construction of Seoakseowon(西岳書院) in Gyeongju(慶州) and the compilation of Seoakji(西岳志) from the 16th to 17th centuries. And from the 16th to 17th centuries, it was intended to examine one aspect of the concerns and thoughts of intellectuals in Gyeongju and to grasp its historical meaning. In the mid-16th century, Joseon intellectuals intensified their research on Neo-Confucianism. For the study of Neo-Confucianism, Joseon intellectuals studied a large number of Song(宋) and Ming(明)'s Neo-Confucian books and published them in. In addition, Joseon intellectuals established a seowon to visually realize the ideal world of Neo-Confucianism. In the process, the theory of Taotong(道統論), a moral genealogy of Joseon, was also reorganized. Seowon defines the character of the person who holds a memorial service and establishes the genealogy of Taotong. In the 16th century, the construction of a seowon honoring Kim Yu-shin(金庾信), who was a virtue of martial(武德), was promoted in the Gyeongju area. Lee Jeong(李楨) a local government official in Gyeongju, built Myowoo(廟宇) to honor Kim Yu-shin, and Jeongsa(精舍), a lecture space, was built nearby. Since then, Seoakjeongsa has held a memorial service for Seolchong(薛聰) and Choi Chi-won(崔致遠), both Confucian scholars, reducing the color of Kim Yu-shin, a virtue of martial. In the 17th century, Seoakjeongsa Temple was reconstructed in the Gyeongju area, and it was recognized by the state as 'Seowon', and a Seoakji was compiled containing the process. Jang Hyeon-gwang(張顯光)'s disciple, Jeong geuk-hu(鄭克後), reconstructed Seoakjeongsa, which was burned down in the Imjin War, and received national recognition as a 'Seowon'. At this time, it was intended to compile a book that collected all the matters of the seowon and the words and deeds of the characters. In addition, Seoakji, a seowonji, was compiled by imitating the Eonhaengroklike('言行錄'類) Books of Song and Myung's Neo-Confucian scholars. Seoakseowon was built in the 16th century by Toegye School as an Jeongsa for the ritual of virtue of martial. In the 17th century, when it was reconstructed by the Yeoheon School, it was recognized by the state as a seowon, and the seowonji was compiled and recorded in its entirety. As such, the people and people who promoted the construction of Seoakseowon, the process of rebuilding and obtaining state approval, and the people who promoted the compilation of books all have historical and ideological meanings.
