Discussion of “Effects of Vibration on Buried Structures from the Removal of Steel Casings during the Installation of Rockfill Columns for Riverbank Stabilization: A Case Study”

The authors presented the results of a comprehensive case study on the effects of vibration resulting from the extraction of steel casings used to install rockfill columns for riverbank stabilization near an old buried concrete aqueduct. This study found that peak particle velocity (PPV) alone was insufficient to identify potential vibration damage to the aqueduct (Nobre et al. 2021(Nobre et al. , 2022(Nobre et al. , 2024)).Both practical and theoretical perspectives were required. From a practical standpoint, the study provided the methodology for installing the rockfill columns. From a theoretical standpoint, numerical analyses using the finite-element approach were used to evaluate the PPV transmitted during the columns' installation and the casings' retraction. The study's findings are significant in assessing the influence of the effect of PPV generated by the stabilization method and in determining significant implications for roadways and structures adjacent to roadways. The discusser would like to comment on a few aspects of the study as follows.
