Abstract 2490 Identification of pathogenic mutations leading to eggshell weakness in Amazona vittata
The Puerto Rican parrot (Amazona vittata), an endangered species and the only parrot under US jurisdiction, faces multiple threats to its survival, including a significant decline in reproductive success. One reason captive breeding programs are struggling to increase the Puerto Rican parrot population is the weakness of their eggshells, leading to a high percentage of embryo mortality. Eggshell formation is a complex biological process influenced by a variety of genetic and environmental factors.
