Abstract 1871 Regulation of Streptococcus pyogenes by the prophage protein paratox
Streptococcus pyogenes, or Group A Streptococcus (GAS), is responsible for causing diseases such as necrotizing fasciitis and rheumatic heart disease. Overall, GAS results in over half a million deaths world-wide annually. The pathogenicity of GAS strains can be attributed to the presence of prophages found within its genome which harbor genes for exotoxins and superantigens. The conserved phage gene prx for the protein paratox (Prx) is genetically linked to virulence genes, but the reason for this linkage is unknown.
