Abstract 2186 Should I put that in my body?: Curricular design for an interdisciplinary course weaving medicinal plants, biochemistry, physiology, medical humanities, pop culture and decision making

Biochemistry is inherently interdisciplinary and is well-positioned to encourage students to synthesize prior STEM content with current topics. This leads to a deeper, well informed understanding of how they experience science and decision making in their everyday lives. We leveraged this crossroads to design a course that would both pique the interest of the current generation of college students, as well as develop informed consumers and citizens who would feel confident to engage in meaningful, scientifically literate decision-making.

Abstract

Biochemistry is inherently interdisciplinary and is well-positioned to encourage students to synthesize prior STEM content with current topics. This leads to a deeper, well informed understanding of how they experience science and decision making in their everyday lives. We leveraged this crossroads to design a course that would both pique the interest of the current generation of college students, as well as develop informed consumers and citizens who would feel confident to engage in meaningful, scientifically literate decision-making.
