Abstract 3031 Structure and Function of ABC Importers
Proteins embedded in the cell membrane function as gatekeepers, selectively regulating the movement of molecules into and out of the cell. Among these, ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters play a crucial role by utilizing the energy from ATP (adenosine triphosphate) binding and hydrolysis to facilitate the transport of specific compounds across the membrane. In bacteria, ABC importers are essential for survival, as they control the uptake of vital nutrients from the surrounding environment. These transporters are particularly critical for importing metals, which serves as essential cofactors for numerous cellular processes.
