Abstract 2019 Probing perilipin 5's function with an amino terminal deletion mutant
As lipid storage-related diseases, including type II diabetes mellitus and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, become more prevalent, it is integral to understand the storage of fats at the molecular level. Lipid storage droplets are specialized organelles in the cell that store neutral lipids. On their surface are the perilipins, a family of five proteins that act as cofactors, trafficking molecules, and regulators of lipid metabolism. The perilipins are highly conserved at the genomic, nucleotide and amino acid level and potentially share protein structural features and domains.
