Abstract 2197 Identification of proteins which regulate System xc-: a proteomics study
System xc- is a membrane transporter that plays a pivotal role in the protection of cells from oxidative stress and ferroptosis. The transporter exchanges extracellular cystine for intracellular glutamate across the plasma membrane, ultimately controlling glutathione synthesis, cellular proliferation, and extra synaptic glutamate levels within the brain. Previously, we discovered System xc- activity increases two-fold immediately following an acute exposure to exogenous hydrogen peroxide as a result of an increase in cell surface localization of the transporter.
