Abstract 2627 Mechanism of chronological lifespan extension in Saccharomyces Cerevisiae
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a critical cofactor for a number of cellular reactions and is synthesized de novo via the kynurenine pathway or also maintained via the salvage of precursors such as nicotinamide (NAM). We discovered that supplementation of NAM or its non-metabolizable isomer INAM into the growth media of budding yeast, S. cerevisiae, is sufficient to extend the chronological lifespan (CLS) of unicellular eukaryote. INAM was more effective than NAM at CLS extension, but it also inhibited cell growth at high concentrations.
