An agile laser system for Rydberg atom-based sensing
Broad spectrum radio frequency field detection using Rydberg atom-based sensors requires rapid shifting of the optical frequency of the coupling laser. Wavelength shifts of several nanometers are required, while maintaining the absolute frequency stability of the laser. We present an agile laser system capable of tuning its frequency over a span of more than 3 nm on a μs timescale. We detail the operation of the optical switching module, which allows for rapid selection of a range of frequencies produced by an optical frequency comb, and the fine tuning module, which provides fine tuning of the selected optical frequency to the precise wavelength of a desired Rydberg transition. These results demonstrate the potential for this system to rapidly access a wide range of optical transitions, enabling the detection of a broad spectrum of radio frequencies.
