Abstract 2572 Characterization of Trehaloneogenesis Activity in the Cockroach Central Nervous System
The cockroach Periplaneta americana is a cosmopolitan and pestiferous species. Its success, at least in part, must be due to metabolic plasticity. Cephalic ganglia transcriptomics revealed expression of enzymes in glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis pathways. Further, trehalose phosphate synthase 1 is also expressed, indicating a pathway to trehalose from glycogen and amino acid precursors. Quantitative PCR confirmed these pathways are expressed throughout the central nervous system, suggesting a more significant role for the CNS in regulating sugar homeostasis than previously recognized.
