Abstract 1547 Innovative Insights into Myoglobin-Metabolite Interactions and Muscle Cell Bioenergetics
Myoglobin (Mb), a member of the globin protein family predominantly expressed in cardiac and skeletal muscle tissues, has long been recognized for its role in oxygen (O2) storage and transport, particularly under conditions of increased O2 demand. Recent discoveries, however, challenge this canonical view, revealing a multifaceted role for Mb in cellular metabolism and signaling. Studies in Mb knockout (Mb-/-) mice suggest compensatory mechanisms, such as enhanced capillarity, that maintain oxidative metabolism under normoxic conditions.
