The Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Automation on HR Practices: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract In recent years, the rapid evolution of technology has dramatically reshaped the landscape of human resource (HR) management. Among the most transformative forces driving this change are Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation. These technologies are not merely altering administrative HR functions but are fundamentally redefining the strategic and operational frameworks within which HR operates. This thesis explores the dynamic relationship between AI, automation, and HR practices, highlighting the opportunities that have emerged as well as the challenges that organizations must navigate. With the global economy becoming increasingly digitized and data-driven, the integration of AI and automation in HR has become not only a competitive advantage but an operational necessity. From talent acquisition and onboarding to performance management and employee engagement, the implications of AI are profound and multifaceted. Organizations worldwide are leveraging AI-powered tools to streamline recruitment processes, enhance decision-making accuracy, and personalize the employee experience, thereby boosting productivity and aligning HR functions with broader business objectives. One of the most significant contributions of AI in HR is its ability to process vast amounts of data and derive actionable insights. Traditional HR operations often involved labour-intensive and time-consuming tasks that relied heavily on human judgment, which was sometimes prone to bias and error. AI mitigates these limitations by enabling data-driven, consistent, and unbiased decision-making. For instance, AI algorithms can screen resumes more efficiently than humans, identifying the most qualified candidates based on a multitude of variables. Automation further enhances this process by allowing repetitive tasks, such as scheduling interviews or sending onboarding documents, to be completed with minimal human intervention. This results in substantial time and cost savings, freeing HR professionals to focus on more strategic activities such as organizational development, culture-building, and leadership training. Furthermore, AI technologies are being increasingly used for predictive analytics in areas such as employee attrition, workforce planning, and talent development. By analyzing historical employee data, these tools can forecast future trends and suggest proactive measures, thereby transforming HR into a more forward-looking and strategic function.
