Abstract 2760 Worming Into Hemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carriers: A Structural Comparison of Mutated Human Hemoglobin and Lumbricus terrestris Erythrocruorins Heme Groups
Lumbricus terrestris erythrocruorins (LtEcs) are Hemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carriers (HBOCs) made of large complexes of protomers found in annelids. HBOCs are protein-derived alternatives to human hemoglobins with the potential for use in blood transfusions as stable, effective oxygen carriers due to their long shelf lives. LtEc also possesses the potential to decrease the rate of auto-oxidation within red blood cells as a result of the phenylalanine present in LtEc's heme pockets that are not present in human Hemoglobin A (HbA).
