Abstract 2759 The Ultimate Toxic Couple: Hemoglobin and Carbon Monoxide's bond
Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a life-threatening condition that disrupts the body's ability to deliver oxygen to tissues. The structure of Human Adult Carbonmonoxy Hemoglobin (HbCO A) (2M6Z) reveals how CO binds tightly to the iron atom in the heme group of hemoglobin, interacting specifically with critical residues His93 (proximal histidine) and His64 (distal histidine). This binding results in a new molecular conformation of hemoglobin, where the two histidine residues adjust their positions to stabilize the CO-hemoglobin complex.
