Abstract 2888 Protein Symphony: Ribosomes as Conductors of Protein Quality Control
The integrity of the proteome is essential for cell viability. For that reason, cells have evolved protein quality control mechanisms that monitor the proteome, either by recovering misfolded proteins or by directing aberrant proteins to degradation pathways. Ribosomes are not only responsible for protein synthesis, but they also play a central role in protein quality control by orchestrating dynamic interactions with various partners to ensure protein homeostasis. Translation of an mRNA that lacks a stop codon, a non-stop mRNA, causes accumulation of stalled ribosomes and the associated aberrant polypeptide products that could be detrimental to the cell.
