Abstract 1230 Exploring Lactase Function and Genetic Diversity: Engaging Students in Experimental Design, Phenotyping, and Genotyping to Connect Biology with Personal and Cultural Heritage
This project engages students in introductory biology courses by having them investigate the relationship between their own genotype and lactase persistence or non-persistence (lactose intolerance) phenotype, with the students as both the subjects and investigators of the study. The objective of this 8-week lab series is to provide students with a hands-on, inquiry-based experience that integrates molecular biology concepts and lab skills with reflection on the implications of their cultural and familial backgrounds on their biology.
