Abstract 2905 Does Prof. YouTube deserve tenure? An assessment of content and quality of explanatory YouTube biochemistry videos, with suggested guidelines for use as coursework or study aids

YouTube has become an indispensable learning resource heavily relied upon by undergraduate and graduate students in the sciences. However, because YouTube and other user-generated platforms lack any systematic editorial or quality review, the quality and accuracy of educational videos are extremely variable, and it is challenging for professionals (let alone students) to find reliable educational resources amid the sea of low-quality content. In this mixed-methods study, we set out to evaluate the reliability and quality of a sampling of explanatory videos on three biochemistry themes (enzyme function, metabolic pathways, and membrane structure), with the goal of creating guidelines for instructors and students to apply when searching YouTube or similar platforms for high-quality educational content.
