Abstract 1981 Investigating the Pro-Inflammatory and Pro-Oxidant Effects of Wood Smoke in Murine Macrophages
Many people around the world rely on the production of biomass fuel from wood, coal, manure or other organic material to cook and heat their homes. Particulate matter released from the burning of biomass can induce potent pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidant responses in individuals that are acutely and chronically exposed to this form of indoor air pollution. Overtime, exposed individuals may also begin to experience chronic lung infections and reduced host defense mechanisms against various pathogens.
