Abstract 1759 Biochemical characterization of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and Phocaeicola vulgatus phosphotransbutyrylases
Among various short chain fatty acids (SCFA), butyrate stands out regarding colonic health as this metabolite serves as the primary energy source for colonocytes, participates in immunoregulation, and exhibits both anti-tumorigenic and anti-inflammatory properties. Enzymes capable of interconverting butyrate with butyryl-CoA connecting this SCFA to central intermediary metabolism are annotated in the genome sequences of several key gut microbiome species, including Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and Phocaeicola vulgatus.
