Abstract 2053 Electrochemical biosensors for detection of pathogenic protists in resident shellfish in Narraganset Bay
Large, open areas of water such as the Narragansett Bay provide a spawning ground and habitat for over sixty species of fish and shellfish. Disease-causing organisms like Perkinsus marinus, Bonamia ostreae and Mucochytrium quahogii affect the ecology of these marine communities and their habitats. The detection of these pathogens inform aquaculturists and researchers about disease distribution and abundance. This project aims at designing novel genosensors that are easy to use, environmentally friendly, repeatable, and specific for the detection of shellfish parasites.
