Abstract 2770 Elucidating the molecular basis of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to antimalarial drugs
Cedars, located along Northern California's coast, is a significant formation of peridotite because of its potential to generate hydrogen gas through serpentinization, which is important for geochemical and geobiological research. However, there is very little understanding of the microbial and biochemical processes involved in the generation of H2 gas and the induced (micro)-seismic activity associated with it.Here, water samples along Austin Creek in Sonoma County were analyzed to enhance the understanding of the H2 production process.Elemental analysis of these water samples, conducted using ICP-MS, revealed the presence of essential dissolved minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium, along with trace elements including iron, cobalt, and nickel. These elements act as critical cofactors for enzymes required involved in microbial metabolic pathways.Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis demonstrated significant concentrations of organic carbon at select sites, with levels reaching 111.95 mg/L, indicating a connection to the biological carbon cycle.Metagenomic analysis uncovered a diverse microbial community encompassing hydrogen-utilizing genera such as Hydrogenophaga and Serpentinomonas, alkaline-adapted taxa like Dethiobacteraceae, Desulfurivibrio, and Roseococcus, as well as nitrogen-fixing genera such as Azonexus and Nitrospira, alongside iron-reducing bacteria like Rhodoferax.Further findings identified anaerobic genera such as Macellibacteroides and Dethiobacteraceae, newly described taxa like Tabrizicola and Undibacterium, methylotrophs including Methyloversatilis, and ammonia-oxidizing archaea from the Nitrosopumilaceae family. Finally, these findings point to active hydrogen metabolism, nitrogen cycling, and methanogenesis. This research underscores the intricate interactions among microbial processes contributing to hydrogen and methane production.
