Abstract 2055 A survey of microsporidial deubiquitinating enzymes reveals an OTU-family deubiquitinase that noncatalytically inhibits the human UBE2K ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme
Intracellular pathogens frequently hijack the ubiquitin-proteasome system to evade immune responses, enhance replication, and facilitate tissue dissemination. This is frequently accomplished by the expression or secretion of deubiquitinases (DUBs) that remove ubiquitin modifications from target proteins, thus altering their biological functions. Microsporidia are a family of poorly understood obligate intracellular parasites distantly related to Fungi that can infect most animals, including humans.
