Empowering Students, Not Just Technology: Unleashing the Power of Self-Efficacy to Drive Self-Regulation in Distance Learning Education

“Technology should be viewed as a tool rather than an end in itself.” To test this idea in educational contexts, this study investigated how 212 Bolivian university students managed their learning in distance education. Through structural equation modeling, the research revealed that student self-regulation, which refers to the ability to control a student's learning process, significantly impacted the beliefs in his learning abilities, known as self-efficacy. The study found that user-friendly distance learning technology was crucial in empowering students to master the platform, thus boosting their self-efficacy. When used to enhance learning, well-designed distance learning technology further supported self-regulation behaviors while limitations hindered them. These findings underscore the importance of nurturing student confidence, establishing clear goals, and providing constructive feedback to promote self-regulation. Furthermore, educators should be discerning in their approach to distance learning technology, prioritizing functional and reliable tools that minimize distractions and enhance the learning experience.
