Mapping and Promoting Nautical Sports Tourism in Niterói, Brazil
Summary Niterói, a coastal municipality in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, exemplifies the potential of integrating nautical sports with sustainable tourism. Despite its attractive beaches, oceanic islands, and the highest density of nautical clubs in Brazil, the city faces limited tourism demand. This case study presents the “Mapping and Promoting Nautical Sports Tourism” project, developed by a team of the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality at Fluminense Federal University in partnership with Niterói City Hall (2021–2022). Funded through the PDPA (Program for the Development of Applied Projects), the project assessed nautical tourism potential, engaged stakeholders, and produced a Strategic Plan to guide sustainable development. While grounded in the specific context of Niterói, the case offers valuable methodologies, participatory approaches, and strategic recommendations that can inform similar initiatives in other coastal locations. The purpose of this case study is to provide practical guidance and critical insights for destination managers and policy makers seeking to develop or strengthen nautical tourism in a socially inclusive and environmentally responsible manner.
