Abstract 1079 Elucidating the role of a flavin-dependent S-monooxygenase in garlic
Flavin-dependent monooxygenases (FMOs) are a large family of enzymes that utilize a bound FMN or FAD prosthetic group to carry out oxidation reactions on a myriad of substrates. FMOs are involved in several biological processes, including xenobiotic metabolism, plant defense, and natural product biosynthesis. While FMOs are present in all domains of life, those in plants remain among the least characterized. The S-monooxygenase TvMAS1 from the society garlic Tulbaghia violacea was recently implicated in the production of marasmin, a natural product with antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties.
