Abstract 1780 Mechanistic Elucidation of Iodothyronine Deiodinases Through X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy
Iodothyronine deiodinases (Dio) are a family of three isozymes responsible for converting substrate thyroid prohormone thyroxine (T4) to its activated form of triiodothyronine (T3) or diverting it to its inactive form of reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) by selectively removing the 5' or 5 iodine, respectively, from the substrate. In this way, the Dios are responsible for regulating thyroid hormone homeostasis which, when dysregulated on the organismal level, can lead to hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism[1].
