Abstract 1351 Conformationally altered hyaluronan HAson8 accelerates healing of cutaneous wounds and skin ulcers in diabetic patients
Hyaluronan (HA) has been extensively used in treating inflammatory knee joints, eye surgery, and many therapeutic applications. Nonetheless, high-molecular-weight HA (2 to 4 million kDa) enhances cancer growth and is not efficient in enhancing wound healing. We determined that when HA is subjected to sonication at 53 kHz for 8 hr, the resulting sonicated HA (HAson8) strongly enhanced skin wound healing in 24 hr in 3-month-old mice, whereas native HA took about a week. HAson8 underwent size reduction and conformational alterations during sonication, as revealed by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD).
