Abstract 2510 Are MARCKS related proteins buffers of PI(4,5)P2?
The lipid PI(4,5)P2 is a crucial regulator of most physiological processes that function in the plasma membrane (PM). The intrinsically unstructured MARCKS-related proteins (MRPs) sequester PI(4,5)P2 via their basic/amphiphilic effector domains (EDs) in vitro, which release the lipid after charge neutralization by phosphorylation. Because MRPs are so abundant in cells, they are thought to sequester the majority of PI(4,5)P2, and therefore serve as a buffer to control signaling reactions that demand elevated levels of the lipid, such as phospholipase C signaling.
