Abstract 2201 Examining the Hydrophobic Cleft of Perilipin 5
Diseases arising from excessive or aberrant lipid storage continue to be a major global health concern. Nearly all tissues of the body store lipids in structures termed lipid storage droplets in which a hydrophobic core of neutral lipids is coated with a phospholipid monolayer and several proteins, chief of which are the perilipin proteins, a family of proteins encoded by five highly conserved genes. Previously a portion of the structure of perilipin 3 was determined and found to consist of a four-helix bundle with a mixed alpha-beta domain arranged in a boot-like shape.
