Abstract 1173 Mitochondrial Regulation of the Cytosolic Redox State Potentiates Ferroptosis
The amino acid cysteine (Cys) supports many critical cellular functions such as redox balance and intermediate metabolism. Many solid tumors are susceptible to the prolonged deprivation of Cys, which promotes an iron-dependent form of cell death termed ferroptosis. We recently demonstrated that mitochondrial respiration is preferentially preserved in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) under Cys limitation through compartmentalized glutathione catabolism to mobilize Cys for use within the organelle.
