Abstract 1964 Transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of human cystathionine gamma-lyase under basal and ischemic conditions
Cystathionine gamma-lyase (CTH) is a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gasotransmitter with cytoprotective properties, particularly in response to oxidative and inflammatory stress. H2S has shown potential in alleviating ischemic damage in tissues such as the kidney, heart, and liver. Downregulated CTH expression during ischemia impairs H2S production and makes tissues more vulnerable to ischemic injury. While the protective effects of H2S are well-established, the challenges associated with the use of H2S donors such as uncontrolled release and pungent smell make these unsuitable for clinical applications.
