Abstract 1589 Genetically engineered exosomes for bridging T cells and transferrin receptor 1-overexpressing cancer cells

Transferrin receptors (TfR) are essential for cellular iron uptake and are classified into two subtypes: TfR1 and TfR2. TfR1, the more extensively studied subtype, is integral to iron homeostasis by mediating the endocytosis of transferrin-bound iron. While TfR1 is typically expressed at low levels in normal tissues, its expression is significantly upregulated in malignant cells driven by their heightened iron demands due to rapid proliferation rates and elevated metabolic activities. This overexpression of TfR1 enables cancer cells to acquire more iron, supporting their growth and division.

Abstract

TfR1, the more extensively studied subtype, is integral to iron homeostasis by mediating the endocytosis of transferrin-bound iron. While TfR1 is typically expressed at low levels in normal tissues, its expression is significantly upregulated in malignant cells driven by their heightened iron demands due to rapid proliferation rates and elevated metabolic activities. This overexpression of TfR1 enables cancer cells to acquire more iron, supporting their growth and division.
