Abstract 2631 Neutral sphingomyelinase 2 and Extracellular Vesicles in Doxorubicin-induced Cardiotoxicity
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are important mediators of cell-cell communication, are released by cells in response to external stimuli, and have potential to serve as diagnostic/prognostic biomarkers. Doxorubicin (Dox) is a widely used chemotherapeutic, but its utility is hampered by dose-dependent cardiotoxicity. Current biomarkers for Dox-induced cardiotoxicity such as troponin, NT-BNP often increase after significant cardiac damage has occurred. As early intervention can be key for maintaining heart function, an early biomarker of Dox effects could be a valuable tool.
