Shell Dimension, Growth Type and Condition Factor of Asian Moon Scallop (Amusium pleuronectes linnaeus, 1758) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia

The Asian moon scallop (Amusium pleuronectes) is a valuable member of the Pectinidae family, celebrated for its high nutritional value and flavor. Despite its commercial significance, it remains underutilized in South Sulawesi, where knowledge of its biology and ecology is limited. This study investigated the shell dimensions, growth patterns, and condition factors of A. pleuronectes in the Makassar Strait and Bone Bay. Sampling was conducted in January/February 2022 and June/July 2023 at Cappa Ujung and Kuri Lompo, analyzing 504 specimens for shell height (SH), shell length (SL), and shell width (SW) through linear regression analysis to eximine the shell dimensions relationship. The results revealed that scallops from the Makassar Strait exhibited larger shell dimensions in 2023 compared to 2022, while Bone Bay showed the opposite trend. Notably, the average adductor muscle weight and meat yield were higher in Bone Bay. Most growth patterns were hypoallometric, indicating that shell dimensions increased faster than body weight. This study provides the first comprehensive assessment of A. pleuronectes in these regions, highlighting its aquaculture potential and offering crucial baseline data for marine resource management in Indonesia.
