Evaluation of the renal biotolerance of ethyl acetate extract of Holarrhena floribunda (Apocynaceae) leaves in rats

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of administration of ethyl acetate extract of Holarrhena floribunda leaves for 90 days on the kidney using biochemical markers and histological sections of rat kidney. Rats were treated with ethyl acetate extract of Holarrhena floribunda leaves at dose of 1000 mg/kg body weight (test batches), and distilled water (control batch). Blood samples were taken weekly during the first month, and then at the end of each month from the 2nd month onwards, to measure a number of serum kidney markers such as uric acid, creatinine, Na+, Cl-, Ca2+ and K+ ions. A histological study of the kidneys was performed on kidneys taken on the 91st and 121st days of the study. The animals tolerated the extract gavage well as no signs of pathological manifestation were observed on them. The histological study showed no tissue damage. However, biochemical analysis showed a significant decrease in creatinine (p
