Constructive Muslim Theology as Disruption, Invitation, and Ethical Intervention
Abstract In this essay, which was originally a presentation for a presidential plenary on “Constructive Muslim Theology” at the American Academy of Religion, I offer three ways for thinking about the nature of the emerging constructive Muslim discourse: as disciplinary disruption, invitation, and ethical intervention. First, I propose that constructive Muslim theology constitutes a distinct and separate disciplinary undertaking from Islamic Studies. Second, I argue that this discourse requires an invitational and collaborative approach. Finally, I explore the ethical stakes that have drawn me into this field and delineate a narrative theology that I am developing for addressing those stakes.
