Foreword FormaliSE 2025

Historically, formal methods research and practical software development have had limited interaction, except in specific domains such as safety-critical software. However, this gap has been narrowing in recent years. Formal methods research has produced more flexible techniques and tools that support various stages of the software development lifecycle–including requirements elicitation, design, implementation, verification, validation, and documentation. Meanwhile, the software engineering community has shown increasing interest in applying rigorous techniques at scale.

Abstract

Historically, formal methods research and practical software development have had limited interaction, except in specific domains such as safety-critical software. However, this gap has been narrowing in recent years. Formal methods research has produced more flexible techniques and tools that support various stages of the software development lifecycle–including requirements elicitation, design, implementation, verification, validation, and documentation. Meanwhile, the software engineering community has shown increasing interest in applying rigorous techniques at scale.
