Modified Z-Source Solid-State Breaker Topology for LVDC Applications

The Z-source solid-state circuit breaker is being so prominent in DC protection systems because of its faster operation, automatic fault response, and needlessness for an auxiliary power supply. This paper proposes a modification on parallel type Z-source breaker tailored for low voltage DC applications. The proposed model reduces the overall breaker size replacing one inductor of the conventional DC Z-source breaker with a diode. It also minimizes the fault current reflection to the source; by implementing a resistor in series with one capacitor. It offers improved frequency response and enhanced system stability while accommodating step changes at the load within the new topology.
