Damping Enhancement Control Strategy for Grid-Forming VSG Based on Active Power Feedback Compensation

The grid-forming virtual synchronous generator (VSG) can operate stably under low-inertia weak-grid condition, and enhances the system's equivalent inertia and damping properties. However, due to constraints on energy storage capacity and frequency regulation standards, the VSG algorithm with a fixed damping coefficient faces challenges in balancing dynamic response with steady-state accuracy requirements of output active power. To address this, a grid-forming VSG damping enhancement control strategy based on active power feedback compensation is proposed. This approach effectively enhances active power damping during dynamic processes, to suppress power oscillations without affecting its steady-state characteristics, furthermore, it has broad parameter design range and high system stability margin. Firstly, the mechanisms behind active power oscillation of grid-forming VSG with fixed damping control, as well as the associated challenges are analyzed. Afterwards, a novel damping enhancement control strategy based on active power feedback compensation is proposed, and a comparative analysis of its characteristics is conducted. Finally, simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy under various operating conditions.
